Sophia Herrera, a senior here at Singley, has become an essential part of our school. From being involved in the Spanish Club, NTHS, HOSA, and our school EMT program, Sophia is also admired by many for her kindred spirit and determination. Her resilience and involvement here at Singley truly are astounding. Balancing responsibilities as Spanish Club Vice President and interning at the fire department and hospital to further her skills within the EMT program, a smile is always seen on Sophia’s face.
When asked about her time in the EMT program, Sophia expressed that although at times it requires you to push yourself a little extra, she highly recommends it to anyone remotely interested in the program. “It really puts you out there, you break the ice with a lot of your peers, especially when you’re practicing your skills, being in such an extensive program brings people closer together, and you push yourself to get to know more people and aiding each other in times of need”. Sophia recalls being nervous at the beginning of everything, especially when it came to going to her internships, but those are what taught her the most overall. She became more confident and knowledgeable within her field of study. “You feel a lot of pride in it,” she added. “Although at times it can sometimes be rigorous, the adrenaline and excitement you also get are unmatched.”
When the topic of the future is brought up, Sophia tells us that once she graduates she is planning on taking the National Registry Exam to become a certified Emergency Medical Technician. She plans on working as an EMT for some of her college years, for she will be attending UTA for nursing school. A dream of hers is to hopefully one day open a practice of her very own.
Looking back on her time here at Singley, Sophia was asked to reflect on her past four years spent at this school. She advises students to be more open and willing to expand their horizons. Being highly involved in clubs and organizations helped her find her people, and truly find her favorite pastimes. “I recommend for students to join clubs, a lot of students use it to settle down and find their place and crowd”.
Sophia’s advice for future seniors: “Senioritis is real, you are going to experience a huge slump, and that’s okay. You just have to take it easy and find time to rest and decompress, it can be very overwhelming, especially with college applications.”
When asked for a quote she lives by, Sophia replied “You may not be able to control how you’re feeling, but you can control how you react to those feelings.” This helps keep her more level headed and grounded in times of frustration and anger.
A fun fact that Sophia wants people to know is that she has two cats, Lucecita and Maia, whom she adores very much.
